Iggy... Iggy!... IGGY!!

According to the NHL rulebook, A captain has: "sole privilege of discussing with the Referee any questions relating to interpretation of rules which may arise during the progress of a game"

Yes, and the rest! Over the next short time Auspuck will be profiling the top five current captains in the NHL. Everyone loves a strong willed, disciplined, talented and relentless captain. These are the traits that we have built around to determine our top five listing. Unfortunately Liam Webster will not be profiled, but it was not for his lack of the above characteristics.

We start today with number five: Jarome Iginla!

(More after the jump)

 Why you love him?
A charasmatic combatant. Iginla is a player that will give everything he has to offer for the team to win. Shift after shift, Iginla has the will to dominate a game.

Why you hate him?
Iginla will beat your team, then be the most popular person off the ice. First and foremost, he is genuine human being who cares about social issues, his reputation and the image of hockey.

What's left to achieve?
A stanley cup. Iginla has come close, a stanley cup finals appearance in 2004 has been the closest brush with glory Iginla has achieved. His current team, Calgary, has built around Iginla for year but hasn't managed to find supportive forwards for Iginla to play with. Time will tell if this can be achieved.

Career Highlights:
  • Drafted 11th overall by Dallas in 1995, was traded to Calgary in 1996 having never played a game for Dallas.
  • Two-time 50 goal scorer, 2002 and 2008.
  • Two-time Olympic gold medalist, 2002, 2010.
  • Five time NHL All-Star.
  • Between 1998 and 2008 - only one player (Jaromir Jagr) scored more goals in the NHL than Iginla.
  • Considered to be the first black captain in NHL history
An exciting player to watch, as you never know what element of his game will come to the forefront. Whether it be his outstanding offensive skills, his momentum changing checks or an inspiring fight, Iginla is a player that was destined to be a great NHL captain.
